International Conference on Sustainable Built Environment (ICSBE-2010) Kandy, 13-14 December 2010 Abstract: This paper presets a methodology and results of evaluating damaged building detection algorithms using an object recognition task based on Differential Morphological Profile (DMP) for Very High Resolution (VHR) remotely sensed images. The proposed approach involves several advanced morphological operators among which an adaptive hit-or-miss transform with varying size, shape and gray level of the structuring elements. IKONOS Satellite panchromatic images consisting of pre and post earthquake site of Sichuan area in China were used. Morphological operation of opening and closing with constructions are applied for segmented images. Unsupervised classification ISODATA algorithm is used for the feature extraction and the results comparison with ground truth data, complex urban area before the earthquake gives 76% and same area wracked after the earthquake gives 88% buildings detection on object based accuracy. This work is being extended to extract shadows and non building objects for better classifications of building roof footprints.

Automated Building Extraction from High-Resolution Satellite Imagery in Urban Areas Using Structural, Contextual, and Spectral Information
High-resolution satellite imagery provides an important new data source for building extraction. We demonstrate an integrated strategy for identifying buildings in 1-meter resolution satellite imagery of urban areas. Buildings are extracted using structural, contextual, and spectral information. First, a series of geodesic opening and closing operations are used to build a differential morpholo...
متن کاملObject-Oriented Method for Automatic Extraction of Road from High Resolution Satellite Images
As the information carried in a high spatial resolution image is not represented by single pixels but by meaningful image objects, which include the association of multiple pixels and their mutual relations, the object based method has become one of the most commonly used strategies for the processing of high resolution imagery. This processing comprises two fundamental and critical steps towar...
متن کاملDetermining the extent of building destruction after an earthquake using satellite imagery and fuzzy logic (Case study of Sarpol-e-Zahab region)
Background and objective: Earthquake is one of the most destructive natural disasters. Earthquakes occur in urban areas, destroying buildings and injuring people living in them. Urban center buildings are among the features that are exposed to many hazards during an earthquake. One of the first measures taken after an earthquake is relief. Locating damaged buildings can speed up relief efforts....

With the recent advancements in image processing techniques and the increasing availability of high resolution satellite imagery, one has an increased ability to characterize human attributes. This paper will study the effects that image fusion has on the classification of Quickbird satellite imagery over a rural area in Eastern India. Two panchromatic sharpening algorithms will be used and com...
متن کاملDamage Detection of the 2011 Tohoku, Japan Earthquake from High-resolution SAR Intensity Images
The Tohoku earthquake of March 11, 2011, caused gigantic tsunamis and widespread devastation. Various high-resolution satellites quickly captured the details of affected areas, and were used for emergency response. In this study, high-resolution preand post-event TerraSAR-X intensity images were used to identify damaged buildings. Since the damaged buildings show changes in backscatter intensit...
